Down on the farm

Why not have a look around and spend a day in the life of one of our free-range Respectful hens.

6.00am: I rise with the dawn. The bright Lincolnshire daylight seeps into my hen house. What a great way to start the new day. With much shaking of feathers and contented clucking, I make my way over to breakfast. Looking around our hen house, you'll be surprised by the space: there are only ever 4,000 hens in a Respectful flock, which is much less than the industry norm.

12.00pm: After spending a busy morning sitting on my favourite perch, I’m starting to feel a bit peckish. I think I fancy some worms and a bit of greenery. So I take a walk through the fields - it will give me a chance to stretch my legs and have a good scratch about.

2.00pm: I can’t stop eating today. Think I might go for some of our tasty locally sourced and milled feed this time. It really fills me up. We're fed this because it's better for the environment. By reducing the distance that the feed travels, we pump less damaging carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. It's important to think about our eggs.

7.00pm: My favourite time of the day. As the sun goes down, I join my mates for a last evening stroll. It's a huge social event – anyone who is anyone steps out at this time of day. I have a long dust bath beforehand to make sure I'm looking my best.

9.00pm: The sun has set, so we snuggle down in our cosy beds and cluck our goodnights. As we drift off into the land of nod, one of the skilled poultry keepers will pop in one final time to make sure all is well. Although this part feels a bit like being in boarding school, I do realise we really are VERY lucky hens.
