The worlds first low-carbon supermarket eggs
June 2008
An ecological revolution will be coming soon to a supermarket near you: eggs are about to go green! From June 11, consumers will be able to enjoy these household staples safe in the knowledge that they have been produced to environmentally sound, free-range methods. What's more, at £1.05 per box from all Asda stores, they cost the same price as the average box of free-range eggs! Now, customers can do more for the environment without damaging their wallets.
Respectful eggs are produced in Lincolnshire, on farms powered by carbon-neutral, renewable energy sources such as wind turbines and solar panels. These methods reduce the amounts of damaging carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere and help to prevent the acceleration of global warming and climate change.
Respectful eggs are free range. The hens live happy lives and enjoy constant access to the farms' large grass ranges. When they choose to be indoors, their houses are designed to encourage natural behaviour such as nesting, dust bathing and perching. They all receive regular care from skilled poultry keepers.
To reduce their carbon footprints further, Respectful egg farmers ensure that their hens are fed with locally sourced grain.
Eggstraordinary facts:
- Research to date shows that Respectful eggs will reach Asda stores with approximately half the carbon footprint of a standard free-range egg
- There are a maximum of 4,000 hens in a Respectful flock, a sharp contrast to the maximum of 16,000 allowed by EU laws in the production of free range eggs
- Respectful egg boxes are made from recycled pulp paper, and are fully recyclable themselves
- Respectful eggs have only 78 calories and are packed with a range of vitamins and minerals vital for maintaining our health
